Our mission is to enable community neighborhood based organizations to meet their challenges and goals by developing and strengthening the spirit of volunteerism and collaboration in the Los Angeles area.
Connect LA wa
s initiated in 1996 by a taskforce of corporate and community leaders, with the support of the Directors of Volunteers in Agencies, Los Angeles (DOVIA), to examine needs and resource gaps facing Los Angeles community based organizations. Connect LA serves as a bridge between organizations to facilitate the connecting process. It brings together leaders from nonprofit, corporate and government sectors to develop grassroots solutions to basic problems.
Founding Year Highlights – 1996
January – Organization formed to link volunteers and community resources, Core
Committee formed.
February – Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce agrees to host meetings, Volunteer Center of Los Angeles becomes a fiscal sponsor,United Way of Greater Los Angeles develops a mailing list.
March/April – Planning meetings for Connect LA Summit begin.
May – Connect LA becomes first Connect America partner, Connect LA calls for Conference papers of best collaborative models.
June – California Community Foundation funds Connect LA Summit.
July – Connect LA holds first Summit with 80 community leaders.
August – Connect LA Follow-On projects begin.
December– Focus projects include : Job training, Health, Volunteer & Collaboration.
Recent Highlights
May 2010 – Celebration of National Women’s Health Month, Connect-LA hosts a booth at “Taste of Tennis.”
July 2010- Business to Community Awards honoring exemplary role models for small and medium sized businesses supporting community based organizations.
August 2010 – Connect LA holds strategic planning meeting.
October 2010 – Teens Make a Difference Day celebrated by teens from City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.
February 2011 – Connection Meeting hosted by 24th Street Theater presented “The Arts: Key to Imagination and Creativity.”
May 2011 – Connect LA in partnership with DOVIA-LA presented “Connecting to Cope – Assessing strategic partners in today’s new economy.
